The morning after

Getting dressed should not be the hardest part of the day

A sling makes a T-shirt impossible. A port makes a crew neck a problem on every treatment day. A new hip turns a pair of sweatpants into a two-person job. None of that is about the clothes being wrong. It is about the clothes being ordinary.

The Deyeek way is to move the opening to where the body stops. A snap seam down the side and over the shoulder, a placket at the chest, a seam down the outside of the leg. Undone, the piece lies flat and goes on around you. Done up, it looks like what it is: a shirt, a top, a pair of pants.

What a snap seam does not do is replace the person who helps on the first morning. We say so on every page.

How a Deyeek piece is built

Snaps first, then everything else

Every adaptive piece in the Deyeek range starts with the seam that opens. We decide where it runs before the collar, the pocket or the colour, because the seam is the reason the piece exists. Then we put the snaps close enough that the garment holds its shape and far enough apart that one hand can work them.

Every new piece is tried on in the Deyeek studio with one arm kept below the shoulder, and again lying down, before it is approved. The pocket for a drain bulb is placed where the bulb will hang, not where the pattern had room.

What the page tells you

Where the opening is and how far it runs. The fastening: snaps, hook and loop or magnets. Sleeve length. Pockets, and whether they are drain pockets. Fabric where the maker states it. The size on the page and every other size in that colour, each with its own price.

What we leave alone

Anything medical. No piece here is a device, none has been reviewed by a clinician, and the words UPF 50+, quick-dry and breathable are printed as the maker's words. Where a description makes a claim we cannot check, the page repeats it under that label and adds nothing.

The questions people ask before they buy

Which shirt for a shoulder in a sling?

One that opens down the side and across the shoulder on snaps, so the arm never goes through a sleeve. Every shirt in the post-surgery bench says on its page which way it opens.

Do the snaps show?

Closed, the seam reads as a seam. The snaps are the same colour as the shirt on most pieces, and the page photographs show both states.

Are these medical products?

No. They are clothes with openings in useful places. They are not devices, they have not been reviewed by a clinician, and they do not replace a dressing, a sling or a caregiver.

Which size should I take?

Your usual size for the everyday pieces. For a shirt that goes over a sling or a dressing, the size above your usual one, so the snaps close without pulling. The size page explains it in more detail.

What does port access mean on a page?

An opening at the upper chest, or along the arm, that can be undone without taking the top off. The page says which. A port is placed under the skin during minor surgery, and getting to it is the whole point of the opening.
